Brand Update: Vespa Back to India
The Italian moped which became a style statement in the 60s, is back in India after a 13 year hiatus. The Piaggio Vespa LX125 was showcased in the New Delhi auto expo. Piaggio had licensed the production of vespa scooters to Bajaj almost 40 years back in the early 60s. There was a joint venture with LML too, from 1983 to 1999. After the joint venture ended, the brand was not to be found in the Indian market.
The brand will be relaunched after almost 13 years in the month of March 2012. Piaggio Vehicles, the wholly owned subsidiary of Piaggio Italy, will launch 125cc Vespa scooters in five colours across 35 cities. Pricing details are not available as yet.
Bajaj, made scooters based on the Vespa, named Chetak, which were a huge hit with the Indian consumers. Globally, Vespa scooters are considered to be more than just a scooter and are looked at as a fashion icon.
